What It Is
The Original Twizmo! from Twizmo Games brings together the elements of Tic-Tac-Toe, a Rubik's Cube, and a card game, and rolls it into one strategy game. Each player is first dealt three cards, which are placed face up on the table. The cube is also shuffled and placed in the center of the table between opponents.
Players take turns twisting the cube to make a matching set of three symbols, either in a row or across like Tic-Tac-Toe. There are three different types of turns of the cube you can make on your turn. You can twist one row 90 degrees, twist two adjacent rows together 90 degrees, or flip the cube over in the hopes that there may already be a set on that side. Make a set on the cube and take any face-up cards on the table that share the same symbol. This includes stealing cards from your opponent.
In the card component of the game, the object is to create sets of three cards that also match sets of the same symbols you've created on the cube. Do so and you can close a set of cards by placing them face down on the table. If you can create a pair of cards but not a full set, these are considered "open" and still up for grabs by your opponent. Replace any closed sets with new cards to complete your hand.
Each set of three matching cards is worth one point and sets of six matching cards are worth four points. If you are ever able to collect all nine cards of any matching symbol, you will automatically win the game. Otherwise play continues until at least one player has no cards left and there are no remaining cards to deal. Then count up your points to determine the winner.
Is It Fun?
This game has a lot of different elements going on. It's not the kind of game that you'll be able to jump into and start playing right away. Even after reading the instructions, it will likely take a few turns before everything starts to click.
We like that it's a game that requires strategic play, however it's also one that simply requires pure luck; Sometimes you can go a full round without a single player creating a matching row. We found this a bit frustrating. However, if you have the patience, we think Twizmo! certainly puts a unique twist on a few classic games.
Who It’s For
Twizmo! is for ages 8 and up. However, as mentioned, the directions can be difficult even for adults to grasp at first. We think the game is best suited for kids that have the patience for the time it will take to learn the game as well as play it.
What To Be Aware Of
We found the directions to be a bit confusing, particularly in regards to the card component.
The instructions include a QR Code that is supposed to take you to a demo video of gameplay, however it only takes you to the game's website. We were unable to find any additional instructions.
