What It Is
Attack of the Shark-Headed Zombie is a terrific chapter book for young boys. The book is written by Bill Doyle with illustrations by Scott Altman. It's part of the series of Stepping Stones chapter books from Random House, and as you might expect from the title, it's a pretty funny and outrageous tale. The stars of the story are cousins Henry and Keats who, when they lose their precious bikes, have to figure out how to replace them without any financial help from their parents. They find a posting for odd jobs and encounter the mysterious Mr. Cigam, which is "magic" spelled backwards. The boys arrive at Mr. Cigam's house at 1313 Houdini Lane to find a basic list of tasks that kids might do, but the oddest job of all is ridding the house of the shark-headed zombie. The two boys dive in gamely thinking the zombie is a joke, but it's not, and they need to use all their creativity and speed to get rid of the undead and very hungry land shark.
Is It Fun?
The humorous and outrageous storyline is targeted to boys around a third- or fourth-grade level. It's fantasy and silliness is completely appropriate, and Doyle writes clearly and engagingly with just the right amount of attitude and suspense for the target age readers. For kids who love to read or boys who may be reluctant readers, this is a very good choice.
