What It Is
The Kurio 10S is a kid-friendly Android tablet with a 10-inch touchscreen that comes pre-loaded with 60 apps, including full ad-free premium versions of the most popular games, such as Angry Birds Space, Fruit Ninja, and Cut the Rope. Premium Disney and Marvel apps feature kids' favorite characters, including Spider-Man and Disney Princesses. The Kurio 10S also comes with a complete preschool through 6th grade learning system developed by American educator Mr. Nussbaum. And there are apps from dozens more top-tier publishers, such as iHeartRadio, reading app MeeGenius, and Toon Goggles along with video streaming apps, coloring apps, and 25 e-books. More apps can be purchased through the Kurio Store and other popular Android app stores. This tablet is even Netflix, YouTube, and Skype compatible.
This wi-fi tablet also allows kids to browse the web using the Kurio Genius Filtering System which covers more than 450 million websites in 170 different languages and features in-app web filtering, so kids can safely surf the web or use apps without encountering inappropriate content. The pre-loaded web browser app also has a kid-safe search engine called KidRex.
The customizable parent controls allow parents to set time limits for using the tablet, manage apps and restrict web access by app, block specific websites and inappropriate search terms, or create safe lists that only allow access to specific approved sites. And because you can create up to eight different user profiles on the Kurio 10S, each profile can have unique settings. This offers full separation of files, apps, search history, game progress and scores, downloads, parental control settings, music, videos, and pictures. Parents can exit the Kurio interface and switch to a full Android tablet without restrictions for personal use.
In terms of technical specs, the Kurio 10S has 8GB of built-in memory. The memory can be expanded up to 40GB with a micro SD card, which is sold separately. This tablet runs on Android 4.2 Jellybean with a quad-core processor. It comes with front- and rear-facing cameras, a headphone jack and mic pin, built-in stereo speakers, an integrated microphone, an HD video player, a music player, and an e-book reader. It also comes with a protective and removable bumper.
The rechargeable battery can be charged by connecting the USB cord to your computer or by connecting the USB cord to the included AC adapter. It takes about three hours to fully charge, and that gives you between six and eight hours of battery life, depending on how you play with the tablet.
Is It Fun?
The Kurio 10S is like having multiple devices in one tablet. With the ability to create so many different user profiles, each kid can have his or her own unique tablet experience. (Although, this could become a problem if more than one child wants to play at the same time. But parents can use the parental controls to determine who can use the tablet when and for how long, so that each child gets a turn.) Though the tablet is a little heavy, we like the large screen and the fast response of the touchscreen. The speed of the internet will depend on your wi-fi network. The pre-loaded games and educational content makes this appealing to young kids, but it can also grow with your child, becoming a basic Android tablet as kids get older and no longer use the educational content.
Who It’s For
The Kurio 10S is for ages 3 and up.
However, we have a hard time imagining giving this expensive and fragile tablet to a 3-year-old, particularly given what it costs. We think that 6 is probably the youngest age that a child would be able to appreciate it, and even then it is for some of the preschool software. Adult supervision is recommended.
What To Be Aware Of
Do not lose your password. Techno Source says that tech support may be not able to retrieve a lost password, and the tablet would have to be factory reset, which means that all personal data will be lost. Doing a factory reset is also a time-consuming and tedious process.
The Kurio 10S is compatible with Macs, but you must first download a free utility from the Kurio website (kurioworld.com) to allow your Mac to access your Kurio tablet.
