What It Is
Baby Santa is a new holiday book written by M. Maitland DeLand, M.D., an oncologist by trade who has self-published this book through Greenleaf Press. Apparently, Santa and Mrs. Claus have a 6-year-old called aptly Baby Santa. Of course, being 6, he can't help but get into mischief, which in this case means that Baby Santa has opened all the gifts and lost their tags, which could slow down the holiday delivery. In fact, Christmas seems to be almost ruined. But, in addition to being rambunctious, Baby Santa also seems to have a gift for knowing what every child might want. And so, he goes along with his father and everything is saved. The illustrations by Phil Wilson are charming and fun.
Is It Fun?
As holiday stories go, this one is pretty thin and contrived, but it might entertain younger children. After the initial "disaster," the story is mostly a list of presents going to children, so it's not a story that's going to keep kids engaged or even inspire that much repeat reading. Over the years, there have been many attempts to expand Santa's family, and none of them have been particularly successful. Unfortunately, Baby Santa doesn't work very well either.
