Fingerprint Digital, a mobile entertainment network for kids, teamed up with app developer TigerFace Games to deliver collaborative learning apps that allow kids in groups of two to four players team up or go head-to-head to hone their math, science, and language skills using a single tablet. One of these new apps is Quick Tap Spanish, a high-speed, head-to-head race where players try to be the first to match a Spanish word to its English counterpart. Kids square off and learn more than 100 words that range from numbers and colors to food and animals. In each level, the first player to make seven correct word matches wins. But be careful because if you guess incorrectly, you lose one of your correct matches.
This app turns learning a foreign language into a game. However, we think this app is really better as a language reinforcement tool for kids who already know how to speak some Spanish. For kids who don't know any Spanish, this might be more of a frustrating game rather than a fun one. The app does not include a tutorial to introduce kids to the English-to-Spanish translations before they play, so kids will probably just make a lot of random guesses until they make a correct match. Doing that means they'll be making a lot of incorrect matches, causing them to lose any of the correct matches they've already made, which can make the game take a really long time to play. Of course, the Spanish words will become more familiar as kids continue to play, but some kids will become too frustrated to want to continue.
We also wish that the app said the Spanish words so kids could hear the correct pronunciation. This would further reinforce the English-to-Spanish translations and prompt kids to repeat the words aloud.
Quick Tap Spanish is for ages 5–11.
The app is also available in French, German, and Portugese. Each is sold separately.
The app is compatible with iOS 5.0 or later. It is compatible with the iPad.
Parents have the option of setting up a free Fingerprint account so they can see their children's progress and invite other family members to play the same game on different devices. You can register when you open the app for the first time or at any other time after.
The app does include an ad for other Fingerprint Digital apps. If you click on the ad, a grown-up is then asked to enter a code in order to download. The code is provided, however, so kids could enter it themselves and be taken to the Apple App store where they could easily click to download. And if they know their parents' Apple password, they could just as easily finalize the purchase.
