What It Is
In this wordless picture book, a young boy is bullied in and out of school. A gentle bluebird follows him around, and the two develop a special friendship. One day, mean bullies take things too far and the bluebird is badly hurt. The ending appears to be a happy one, but it's intentionally ambiguous and left to the reader's interpretation.
Is It Fun?
"A picture is worth a thousand words" and that is certainly true in this case. Clearly, Bluebird can be an effective catalyst for a conversation about bullying and friendship. But, it's also a graphic masterpiece, created in primarily blue and gray tones, that took a decade to complete. Wordless picture books, such as Bluebird, have become a popular trend in recent years, and there are numerous uses for them at home and in the classroom. They are an excellent way to get kids to thinking and talking. In the classroom, wordless books are a great tool for teachers to use to identify plot sequence and prompt students to probe an author's broader messages. And, especially in the case of Bluebird's open ending, wordless books can also be a great kick-starter for students to script their own version of the story and work on creative writing techniques.
