What It Is
Junie B. Jones was created just over 20 years ago by Barbara Parks. This special 20th anniversary color edition of the series first book introduces readers to the wacky character who resists everything about school, from riding the bus to meeting teachers and making friends.
Is It Fun?
Despite being a highly dislikable character, Junie B. Jones seems to get young kids reading on their own. Junie is the type of child that would make a parent audibly groan when asked by a daughter to have her over for a playdate. However, Junie must appeal to kids as evidenced by the 55 million copies of her books that have been sold. Random House uses the series’ popularity to promote reading and literacy, and that makes this insufferable character somewhat tolerable.
Who It’s For
Junie B. Jones books are written for the kindergarten and first grade audience.
What To Be Aware Of
Adults should familiarize themselves with the text. Words such as “stupid” and “hate” are freely used, and Junie has no respect for adults or peers. While it’s our responsibility to model good behavior for our children, Junie B. certainly gives plenty of examples for parents to discuss what is NOT appropriate behavior!
