What It Is
Scattergories originally came out in the 1980s, and now in 2013, the game has been updated. It's still the same fun gameplay but with a few changes. The object of the game is to come up with unique answers for each category. You score points if your answers are different from all the other players' answers. If you score the most points, you win.
The game is for two to four players or teams. Each player/team gets a Scattergories folder, a pen or pencil (not included), an answer sheet, and a category list. Roll the die and call out the letter showing. Flip the timer and each player/team thinks up answers that start with that letter for each category. You can write up to three answers for each category using the three columns on the answer sheet. When time runs out, everybody stops writing.
Teams take turns reading their answers aloud, one category at a time. You score one point for each different, acceptable answer. You don't score any points if you wrote down the same answer as someone else. If you have a two word answer and both words start with the rolled letter, you score two points. Everyone keeps track of their scores, and then you start a new round by rolling the die again. After playing two rounds, add up the scores, and the team or player with the highest score wins.
Scattergories comes with four folders, one answer pad, a 20-sided die, 32 category cards, and a timer.
Is It Fun?
The updated version of Scattergories is just as much fun as the original. The game challenges players to think creatively to come up with original answers that will score them points. This version is even a little more challenging than the original because instead of coming up with one answer per category, you've got to come up with three.
Who It’s For
Scattergories is for ages 13 and up. We've found that kids as young as 7 can play as long as you're playing on teams and the kids are paired with adults.
What To Be Aware Of
The 20-sided die is heavy, and Hasbro recommends only rolling it in the game box to prevent possible damage, presumably to furniture or your playing surface.
