What It Is
Jack's Beanstalks Jack and the Magic Beans is not your traditional Jack and the Beanstalk fairytale. This picture book is part of a new series of books called My1story (an awkward way of saying "My First Story") that takes popular fairytale characters and stories and adapts them in a more kid-friendly and contemporary way. In Jack's Beanstalks Jack and the Magic Beans, the "fe fi fo fum"-saying Giant no longer wants to grind Jack's bones to make bread. Instead, this Giant is named Beanie and he spends a day hopping from cloud to cloud with Jack. But when it's time to leave, Jack takes something that doesn't belong to him and learns an important lesson about taking something without permission. This 42-page book is written by Jaime Rodriquez and Ricardo Venegas and illustrated by Jaime Rodriguez.
Is It Fun?
This version puts a sweet twist on a somewhat scary fairytale with a good message about sharing. Even with its new contemporary theme and storyline, it has a nostalgic appeal for parents.
Who It’s For
Jack's Beanstalks Jack and the Magic Beans is for ages birth–5.
What To Be Aware Of
Additional My1story books include Lil' Riding Hood & Wolfie I Love Cake!, Humpty Humpty's Hat, 3 Lil' Pigs & Harry I Want Candy!!!, and Goldie & the Teddy Bears This One's Just Right. Each book is sold separately.
Some parents might find it unnecessary to take the original fairytales and make them more palatable to children. After all, kids have been growing up for years hearing all the "scary" parts of the originals. But some parents might be looking for this kind of alternative or just some new tales featuring classic characters. It's up to parents to decide if these are books to add to the family library.
