What It Is
Lil' Riding Hood & Wolfie I Love Cake! is not your traditional Little Red Riding Hood fairytale. This picture book is part of a new series of books called My1story that takes popular fairytale characters and stories and adapts them in a more kid-friendly and contemporary way. In Lil' Riding Hood & Wolfie I Love Cake!, instead of eating people, the big bad wolf becomes a little wolf named Wolfie who loves to eat cake. He tries to trick Grandma and Lil' Riding Hood into giving him the cake to eat all by himself, but in the end, he learns that sharing is the best way to eat cake. The book is written by Jaime Rodriquez and Ricardo Venegas and illustrated by Jaime Rodriguez. It retails for $16.95.
In addition to the book, there is also a stuffed version of Lil' Riding Hood for kids to cuddle and play with as they read. The 11.5-inch soft doll is sold separately from the book for about $16.99.
Is It Fun?
This book puts a sweet twist on a somewhat scary fairytale. The illustrations are really cute, and the story has a good message about friendship and sharing. The soft Lil' Riding Hood doll looks just like the character in the book and makes a great playtime companion to the book.
Who It’s For
Lil' Riding Hood & Wolfie I Love Cake! is for ages birth–5. The Lil' Riding Hood soft doll is for ages 18 months and up.
What To Be Aware Of
Additional My First Story books include Jack's Beanstalks Jack and the Magic Beans, Humpty Humpty's Hat, 3 Lil' Pigs & Harry I Want Candy!!!, and Goldie & the Teddy Bears This One's Just Right. Each book is sold separately.
We're not big fans of making Fairy Tales more kid-friendly as it really undermines the classic value of these tales, but some parents may find this appropriate for kids who can't deal with a Big Bad Wolf. These stories have clear delineations between good and bad, and by making everyone good but just a little selfish, the fundamental purpose of the story is weakened.
