Disney Storytime is a book collection app of stories featuring favorite Disney characters. When you open up the app, you'll find three stories ready for reading. Seventeen other stories are available for you to buy. These books can be purchased using sets of two, five, or 17 credits. Credits are bought directly through in-app purchase. Kids can easily go into Disney Storytime and choose a story by looking at the cover, swiping through images of favorite Disney characters, or by going directly to their custom bookshelf. Each story has been digitized from a traditional Disney book. You won't find any visual interactivity, but tapping on an image prompts sound effects, which can easily be turned off on the settings page. Each story has two modes: Read to Me with narration or Read By Myself without narration. There is also a recording feature on the top of each page for kids or parents who want to record their own voice telling the story. We recommend setting the app to not turn pages automatically if you are going to use the record feature.
What we like about this app is that parents are getting the largest collection of Disney storybook apps in one place. With overflowing apps cluttering up our devices, having a single app that brings together 20 stories is more than welcome. The stories starring Disney characters are quick and entertaining for kids.
This app is for ages 3–5 but with parental supervision. One thing you do need to be aware of is that Disney Storytime is filled with advertisements for Disney apps and has multiple places where little fingers can tap and be prompted to make purchases. The best way to avoid unintended purchases is to download the complete set of stories or to make sure that the internet is turned off while your child is using the app.
This app is compatible with the iPod Touch (3rd generation or later), iPhone 3Gs, iPhone 4, and iPad.
Something to look forward to come mid-April will be an update with a free Story Builders Story featuring Nemo. We're very much looking forward to seeing how the app supports kids in creating their very own digital Disney stories.
