What It Is
We love it when a movie-based video game does something unique rather than just making a game that plays through the movie. That’s exactly what D3 did with The Croods: Prehistoric Party.
As you might expect, all of the main characters and familiar settings from the movie are in the game but what makes this game different (from many movie games) is that it’s a party game where players choose a character as their token and select a setting as a game board. Players take turns rolling a dice and moving along the board’s spaces just like in a classic board game. It’s like a Mario Party game with Croods characters and humor.
Is It Fun?
There are five unique game boards with mini-games scattered along each board. When one player lands on a Mini-game space, all players are pulled off the board and into a challenge. These challenges are made up of 30 Croods-themed mini-games that are all fun and funny. The mini-game, “Shell Sweeper” is like a game of Bejeweled with four players competing at the same time to line up matching shells. “Ramu Rampage” is a race with the players riding on prehistoric-looking ostriches. In “Cloud Bounce”, you bounce on clouds and the other players to reach floating handprints. “Fire Tail Trail” is like the Tron light cycles race where you have to trap someone in the trail left by your character.
Who It’s For
People who have never seen the movie have been enjoying this game but fans of the movie are really going to get an additional kick out if it.
It’s perfect for families to play together and one that grownups and kids will equally enjoy. Kids as young as 5 and inexperienced (gaming) adults should have no problem figuring out how to play.
What To Be Aware Of
Anywhere from one to four people can play together but the game is most fun with multiple people. The game will assign computer-controlled players to the game for any less than four people, which means if one person is playing alone, they will be competing against three computer-controlled players.
The Croods: Prehistoric Party is available for the Nintendo Wii U, Wii, 3DS and DS. For our review, we played the Wii edition, which is essentially the same as the other editions.
The nice thing about party games like this is that no two games are ever the same, which means the game can be played over and over and always have a different outcome.
