What It Is
Hot Wheels SpinShotz discs are top toys with the ability to speed, accelerate, and fly through obstacles. The Hyper Speed Showdown track set allows head-to-head SpinShotz competition. Kids can challenge each other and test their skills in knocking down targets and opponents. The Hyper Speed Showdown takes advantage of the spinning capabilities of the SpinShotz tops in a circular arena where the object is to stay in and "on top" the longest. The included modular track lets kids design their own entries into the Hyper Speed Showdown. Once an entrance has been created, place the SpinShotz on the base and give it a few turns. (Try different numbers of turns to find the best performance. However, if you turn it too much, the SpinShotz will fly out of the arena.) Then place the disc and launcher through the hole on the track, and press the red release button to launch the SpinShotz into the Hyper Speed Showdown arena where the SpinShotz will spin like a top and hit other SpinShotz spinning in the arena or obstacles. One SpinShotz disc is included. The Hyper Speed Showdown is compatible with SpinShotz Starter Sets, which are sold separately.
Is It Fun?
While we like this line in general, this particular toy is frustrating. It's difficult to get the tops onto the battle platform. While trial and error is part of any skill-based game, we had a hard time figuring out how to make this work consistently. In fact, it doesn't, and the results were often random, so there isn't really a traditional learning curve in getting this to work.
This is a good line of toys, and there are lots of items in the line that are engaging and really can get kids involved with the tops. This, however, isn't one of them.
