What It Is

Young Sadie’s father grew up celebrating Christmas, and her mother, Hanukkah. In Sadie’s family, the two traditions are blended. So, holidays at Sadie’s house means golden gelt under the Christmas tree and candy canes hanging on eight menorah branches and so forth.

Is It Fun?

Today, many families have blended cultures and religions. But, this story provides no explanation of what the featured holiday elements mean, nor to which religion they belong. For example, we read that “Uncle Zachary recalls the miracle of the oil.” But what exactly is that miracle, and is it part of Hanukkah or Christmas? Also, the story does not mention the true spiritual meaning of each holiday. Isn’t that more important than eggnog or latkes?

The illustrations are the most enjoyable aspect of this book. They are done in a collage style, which really adds a unique sense of texture to what are ordinarily pictures on a flat page.

Who It’s For

This book is one to seek at the library with your pre-k or kindergarten child.

What To Be Aware Of

While the concept is admirable, the author misses some key opportunities to teach children the differences and traditions of Christmas and Hanukkah.
