What It Is
Forming words by adding letter tiles to the game board is the goal of Mark My Words. To begin, the letter tiles are turned letter-side down and shuffled. The number of players determines how many tiles each player takes. Once all players have their tiles, they turn them face up in front of them.
Players pick one of their letter tiles and place it anywhere on the board. On subsequent turns, a player may place one of their letter tiles on the board only if a new word is created. A point is given for each new word. For example, if player one places an O on the board, and player two places an N, "NO" and "ON" gain the second player two points. If player one then adds a T, to make "TO", "NOT", and "TON", he gets three points.
The letters that create the word must be touching on some part of the neighboring side, which is not always easy because the tiles are cut in various shapes and sizes. Corner-to-corner connections are not allowed. Words may be read from top to bottom, right to left, and zigzag, as long as they are touching in sequence.
When no player is able to form or discover a new word, it is time to tally the points. The player with the highest number of points wins the game.
Mark My Words comes with 75 letter tiles, six blank tiles, a foldable board, and instructions. The game is for two to six players.
Is It Fun?
Fans of Scrabble will like this new take on word games. Mark My Words challenges players to create words with the letter tiles they draw but adds a level of difficulty when it comes to placing the tiles on the board. Because the letter tiles have to touch in sequence, players must get creative in the placement of their tiles to create words and score points.
Who It’s For
Mark My Words is for ages 8 and up.
What To Be Aware Of
You can also play the game using blank tiles, a free letters pile, and a timer. But Family Games America recommends omitting those elements from the game the first few times you play. After easing yourself into the play of the game, those elements can be incorporated.
