What It Is
A young trick-or-treater dares to venture to the woods on the edge of town and finds that the trees are really made of bones. Bat bones, cat bones, and rat bones. Dog bones, hog bones and frog bones. But, the book’s young hero is not afraid! He bravely trudges through and is rewarded with a windfall of candy.
Is It Fun?
There’s something especially haunting about a forest in the fall. The bare trees and stillness, especially at dusk, gave me the creeps as a kid. Marion Dane Bauer’s story and John Shelley’s illustrations do a great job of capturing that eerie feeling, but in a gentle way. Ms. Bauer’s verse is very fun to read aloud and simple enough for beginning readers to try. This new picture book will be a real treat year after year.
Who It’s For
The publisher’s recommend age range is 4 to 6, but younger children may enjoy this book, providing they won’t find trees made of bones too scary.
What To Be Aware Of
The book is only available in hardcover, but the read-again potential is very high, making it a wise purchase.
