What It Is
Montessori Letter Sounds is a multi-level app that lets kids practice pre-reading skills. To get started, tap on the big yellow book and create a profile for each of the kids in your home. Then you can get started on the activities, which take your child from learning letter sounds to sounding out simple words. On the home screen you see four pencils. These are the activities. You have to start in the first two games. They're called I Spy and Letter Sounds. In I Spy, you use the recording feature to record yourself saying the name of what is on the given picture. The app reinforces the beginning sounds of each of the words. In Letter Sounds, you listen and hear letter sounds and get to play with each one in a tracing activity. Tap on the sandbox for free-writing and using the eraser rake.
After completing these games, earning marbles along the way, you can move onto the next two games: Mix and Match and Sound it Out. The app intentionally locks these games. It's important for kids to be working through the games that are developmentally appropriate for them and not guessing at concepts that are just too challenging. In Mix and Match, kids start by exploring letter sounds and words. They get to play with dragging the beginning letter sounds to matching picture cards. In Sound it Out, kids are dragging letters to build complete words. Kids are free to try different letters until they find the right one without any error noises getting in the way.
On the bottom of the main screen there is a toolbox with five tabs. These are free unstructured play areas for kids.
Is It Fun?
We have watched kids get completely absorbed in Montessori Letter Sounds. Kids will love the structured letter play as well as the unstructured free play within this app. It's a great way to introduce preschoolers to letters and the sounds they make.
Who It’s For
Montessori Letter Sounds is for ages 3–6.
What To Be Aware Of
Montessori Letter Sounds is compatible with the iPad. It requires iOS 4.3 or later.
This is a completely safe app for your child to use. You'll find no links, ads, or in-app purchases.
There is also an update being planned for the app to allow kids to play with cursive letters.
