What It Is
Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is a third-person perspective shooter game in which you play as multiple Transformers in a story-driven campaign mode. This is an original story that has nothing to do with the movies or animated series and takes place on the Transformers home planet of Cybertron. We get to play through an epic battle between the Autobots and Decepticons as they struggle with one another across the planet.
Is It Fun?
Each level has you playing as a different Transformer (both Autobots and Decepticons) with playable characters including Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Grimlock, Jetfire, Starscream, Bruticus and Megatron to name a few. Each Transformer has a unique ability plus the ability to carry two weapons. The unique abilities, which range from Jazz’s grappling hook to Soundwave’s ejectable Mini-Cons, keep you wanting to play to see what character you get to become next.
In addition to the main story mode, there is also an excellent Online Multiplayer mode that pits you against players around the world in four different battle challenges. This mode also includes an elaborate customizable Transformer feature that lets you build your own Transformer.
Transforming in the game can be done at almost any time (with a few exceptions) and it’s awesome. The game does a great job of letting you transform quickly and with style.
Who It’s For
Transformers fans of all ages, from kids to adults will thoroughly enjoy this game. The game is rated ‘T’ for Teen because of the violence but since this is robots shooting robots, there is no blood or gore, just lots of metal.
Most of the robots getting killed are unnamed soldiers, however, there is one particularly surprising scene that little kids might find upsetting or confusing. Early in the game, Bumblebee jumps in front of a blast from Megatron that was intended for Optimus and is killed. I would be ok with my 8-year-old nephew seeing this scene but not his younger brother.
What To Be Aware Of
The Multiplayer mode allows the players in the game to communicate with each other through a mic. That means that your kids will be able to chat with other players during the game and even if you don’t have a mic, you can still hear other players talking. I only bring this up because you will hear a fair amount of trash talk and cursing from other players.
The Multiplayer mode will keep you returning to this game over and over with no two games ever playing out the same.
