What It Is
LEGO Duplo Jams is a free app that provides an interactive, musical environment for toddlers and preschoolers. From the app's home page, kids pick one of five songs/scenes.
Sort Out the Blues is a space-themed scene. As the rocket launches up into the sky, a song plays and kids can touch any of the objects for different sound effects and motion. When kids move the device left or right, the rocket will also turn in that direction.
Brick Racer is a car-themed scene. As the racecar drives along the track, a song plays and kids can touch the LEGO brick creations and other objects for sound effects, motion, and roadway obstacles.
Barnyard Serenade is a farm-themed scene with a matching game. After playing the matching game, kids can touch the animals and other objects in the scene for movement and listen to the song.
Stick Together is a train-themed scene with a song. When kids touch the train, LEGO bricks will fall on top of the train and conductor phrases and other sound effects will play.
Build with Letters is an ocean-themed scene with an octopus and letters that appear underwater as fish swim by and music plays. Kids can touch the fish to make letters appear and pop bubbles.
In each scene, there will be three items for which kids can record their own sounds. Just touch the plus sign button at the top right-hand corner of the screen, then touch the music note button to see what three items can be programmed. Touch the item and when you see the words "Start recording," just make the sound right at the device. When you touch that item within the scene, you'll hear your sound.
There is also a Bedtime Mode scene with sheep running around the moon as LEGO bricks, which kids can tap for movement, fall in the night sky.
Is It Fun?
Each scene is very colorful and has a lot to keep children engaged. Kids will enjoy the surprises of the sound effects and movement as they touch the different items within each scene. They will also like being able to record their own sounds and hear those sounds played back as they use the app.
Aside from the matching game, there's no guided play in this app. The app is essentially just listening to songs and touching items to see what happens.
Who It’s For
The LEGO Duplo Jams app is for ages 2–5. Mom or dad may need to help younger children navigate through the app, such as from one scene back to the homepage, and record the sounds.
However, because it has no guided play or objective, it's likely to appeal most to younger kids who are intrigued by touching the screen and seeing what happens.
What To Be Aware Of
Because there are no instructions, the first time kids play, parents may need to touch a few objects in a scene to show kids that touching objects is how you play with this app.
The LEGO Duplo Jams app is compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch (3rd Generation), iPod Touch (4th Generation), and iPad. It requires iOS 4.0 or later.
To turn off the music and sounds, touch the plus sign button at the top right-hand corner of the screen. Then touch the sound button.
To get back to the homepage, touch the plus sign button at the top right-hand corner of the screen. Then touch the house symbol.
Because different things happen each time you touch an item within the scenes, there might be a new surprise or two to keep kids interested. And kids may also want to come back and listen to their favorite song.
