What It Is

Bits is a building game with similarities to Tetris. The object is to build shapes by arranging tiles on a grid in order to win as many points as possible.

Each player receives a game board and ramp on which to place the game board. Players also receive a full set of game tiles. (There are four sets of tiles with different symbols on them.) The game is played in three rounds. In round one, turn over a Task Card with the number one on the back. Players must copy the shape that is shown by arranging their tiles to make solid color blocks. The shape can be in any color. Players will score two points for each shape they make and an additional point for any solid-colored block of exactly four squares they make. To begin making shapes, each player takes a starting card from the pile and the corresponding starting tile, then places the starting tile on the game boards. Then a player turns over a building card. Each player takes the depicted tile from their stock of tiles and places it on their board. So if a player turns over a card showing the double red tile, all the players find their double red tile and place it on their game board. Then another player turns over the next building card and so on. The round ends when none of the players are able to lay a tile. The first round's scores are added up. Remove all the tiles from the boards to prepare for the next rounds.

For the second round, players turn over a Task Card with the number two on the back. Players must create the specified shape in the specified color to score points. You can also try to make the shapes from round one to score points. For the third round, players turn over a Task Card with the number three on the back. If players create the specified shape in any color, they lose points. Players can also make the shapes from round one and round two to score points.

There is also an advanced version with four rounds of play that uses the Task Cards with the number four on the back.

Bits comes with 90 plastic tiles: 4 sets of 20 game tiles, five starting tiles, four neutral tiles, and one spare tile. Also included are four game boards, four ramps with 16 rubber feet, five starting cards, 20 building cards, and 16 task cards. The game is for two to four players, but Bits also comes with instructions on how to play solo.

Is It Fun?

Bits is a challenging game that gets players thinking strategically and using spatial skills. Fans of Tetris and other puzzle-type games will enjoy playing Bits.

There are four pages of rules, so this is not the kind of game that you will be able to start playing right after opening the box. Children at the younger end of the recommended age range (and even some adults) may find the rules confusing, so you might want to do a practice round to make sure everyone understands how to play. Once you start playing Bits, everything starts to make sense, and you'll find the game clever, challenging, and interesting.

Who It’s For

Bits is for ages 8 and up.

What To Be Aware Of

The first time you play, it will take about 10 minutes to set up because you will need to remove pieces from bags and detach pieces from perforated sheets.
