What It Is
The Wood Puzzle First Years app gives young children 18 different classic-looking wood puzzles to solve. Choose a puzzle and match the colorful puzzle pieces to the empty shapes on the puzzle board by touching the screen and dragging the puzzle piece to the appropriate shape. If you drag a piece to the wrong shape or don't drag the piece exactly on top of the shape, the piece will go back to the end of the puzzle piece line so you can try again. When kids match a puzzle piece to its correct shape, they will hear different noises and phrases and even see animation in some of the puzzles. In an underwater-themed puzzle, matching the bubbles with the bubble shape elicits bubble noises. When you match the crab with the crab shape, you'll hear a child's voice say, "Crab." When each puzzle is completed, children will hear a child's voice say an encouraging phrase, such as "You're doing great." The app also allows you to hear the phrases in Spanish. As children progress through the app, the puzzles get a little bit harder. The last puzzle is a xylophone that, once completed, kids can actually play by tapping the colored keys with their fingers.
Is It Fun?
With its classic wood puzzle look, Wood Puzzle First Years merges a classic play pattern with today's technology. This is a colorful, entertaining, and simple app that helps toddlers and preschoolers develop logic and fine motor skills. Kids will want to go back and put together their favorite puzzles from this app over and over again.
Who It’s For
While not specifically age-graded, the app is designed for toddlers and preschoolers. We think it is appropriate for kids 1 and up.
What To Be Aware Of
The Wood Puzzle First Years app is compatible with the iPad, iPod Touch, and iPhone. There is a free version, Wood Puzzle First Years Lite, but it only comes with three puzzles.
You can turn off the sounds and phrases of children talking, but the sound effects that go along with the puzzles are really a lot of fun. What you can't turn off is the music that plays non-stop whenever the app is on. Luckily, the music is pretty soft and doesn't interfere too much with the noises and phrases of the puzzles.
Getting back to the home page from a puzzle requires a few steps: Press the gear icon in the top left-hand corner of the screen. A house icon will appear on the top right-hand corner. Press the house icon and you'll be taken back to the home page where you can either choose another puzzle or touch the large gear icon to change the language settings or turn on and off the sounds and phrases.
Tropisounds' collection of Wood Puzzle Family Apps also includes Wood Puzzle, Wood Puzzle Maze, Wood Puzzle Soccer, Wood Puzzle USA Map, and Holiday Themed Wood Puzzle. Each app is sold separately. Most cost $0.99 or $1.99, but some free versions are available.
