What It Is
Word Wave is an electronic, fast-paced game of word making and taking. The centerpiece of the game is the Word Wave, a battery-operated device that launches letter tiles. The object of the game is to score the most points by making words with the letter tiles that pour out of the Word Wave. Players can grab the letter tiles to make words or steal other players' words by adding letters to them.
Load the letter tiles into the top of the Word Wave. Turn on the Word Wave machine and, after five seconds, letter tiles will begin to slide out of the Word Wave and onto the table. There are no turns in Word Wave. Everyone plays at the same time. If you see a word, shout it out, then grab the tiles that spell it. For example, if you see a C, an A, and a T, shout "Cat!" and place the three letter tiles in front of you so that they spell the word. (All words must have three or more letters.) At any time, you can steal words from other players by adding letters to their words. So you could steal another player's "cat" by adding an H to make it "chat". Another player could steal your "chat" by adding an S, a C, and an R to make "scratch". When you steal words from other players, you must change the word and the meaning. You can't just make plurals.
Play until the last wave of letters has come out of the Word Wave. After the last letter is launched, the Word Wave will run for another 60 seconds, then turn itself off. Keep using the letters on the table and your opponents' words to make new words. When the Word Wave turns itself off, the game is over and it's time to start scoring. You score points for every word that you have created. The first three letters of a word score one point. Every letter after the first three score one point each. For example, if you have the word "surf", the "sur" scores one point and the "f" scores one point, so you'd have two points. The player with the highest total score wins.
There are three different Word Wave settings that determine how quickly letter tiles will be launched. Ripple is a slow game that is best for two players. Wave is a medium game that is best for three to four players. And Tidal Wave is a fast game that is best for five to six players.
Word Wave comes with the Word Wave electronic unit, 80 letter tiles, and an instruction sheet.
Is It Fun?
Because everyone plays at the same time, you'll have to be quick to spot and grab words as you see them. We really liked the active play and the speed. For young readers, the game reinforces basic reading skills. They have to rotate the letters in their mind and practice sequencing. Mostly though, players will enjoy the action challenge and fast-paced fun.
Who It’s For
Word Wave is for ages 8 and up.
What To Be Aware Of
Word Wave requires three AA batteries, which are not included.
For best results, Word Wave should be played on a smooth, flat surface.
A single game of Word Wave will take less than 10 minutes. If you'd like to play a more competitive game, you can play multiple rounds. Write down players' scores at the end of each round. The first player to reach 100 points wins the game.
