What It Is
P is for Pirate: A Pirate Alphabet takes readers through the history of piracy with each letter of the alphabet representing a different pirate topic. Topics include legendary ships, fabled hideouts, notorious pirates, such as Blackbeard, and even a female pirate and movie pirates. Each topic has its own short poem along with more text in a sidebar that gives a deeper explanation of the topic. The last page of the book includes a list of questions to quiz kids on what they've just read. Written by Eve Bunting, the 40-page book includes illustrations by John Manders.
Is It Fun?
Any kid with an interest in pirates will love learning about all things pirate in this book. This definitely packs a lot of information but without being too text-heavy. The illustrations have an element of humor in them to keep the tone of the book light, even if the topic, such as flogging, seems a little heavy.
Who It’s For
P is for Pirate: A Pirate Alphabet is for ages 6-10.
What To Be Aware Of
Even though this book is geared toward kids, some of the topics are a little graphic. We are talking about pirates, after all. So if you're not sure whether your kid can handle reading about hangings and floggings and sitting on a man's chest to make sure he's no longer breathing, then this might not be a good book choice.
