What It Is
In the math game Clumsy Thief, players get money by making or stealing money stacks. The object is to be the player with the most money. The game, which is for two to six players, comes with 84 money cards, six thief cards, and four jail cards.
To play, each player starts with seven cards and creates money stacks using those cards. A money stack is made up of two cards that add up to exactly $100. Once all players have built their money stacks, the stealing can begin. At the same time, all players may steal money stacks from any player using the cards in their hands. There are three ways to steal. You may steal a money stack if you have a card in your hand that adds up to $100 when added to the top card of the stack you want to steal. If you have a thief card, you can steal any stack with a money card or thief card on top. If you have a jail card, you can use it to only steal a money stack with a thief card on top. You can also use the jail card to top your own thief card money stack to prevent other players from stealing it. You can also add money to your stacks if you have a card in your hand that equals $100 when added to the top card of any of your stacks.
When no one is able to steal or play on any money stacks, then each player takes one card from the draw pile, creates more money stacks, and starts the stealing all over again. Play continues in this manner until one player runs out of cards or there aren't enough cards left in the draw pile for every player. If you still have cards in your hand, discard them. Players then add their card stacks. Money cards are worth their dollar value, but thief, jail, and discarded cards have no value. The player with the most money wins.
Is It Fun?
When you get to the stealing portion of the game, it's fast-paced silliness, but it also gets your brain working because you've got to be fast at adding up numbers. This makes the game a good way to practice addition skills. Even though two people can play the game, it's definitely going to be more fun and chaotic with more players.
