What It Is
The Big Piano is an electronic 24-key piano mat modeled after the famous, and much bigger, Big Piano in FAO Schwarz's 5th Avenue store in New York. This smaller version, measuring 70 inches by 31 inches, comes in a carrying case and allows kids to play songs by stepping on the piano keys. Each white key is numbered, and kids can make up their own songs or follow the numbered instructions to play "London Bridge is Falling Down," "Row Your Boat," or "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." The black keys activate built-in melodies. The instructions say that there are six built-in melodies, but there are 10 black keys, and each one does play its own song. So in addition to "Fur Elise," "Swan Lake," "Santa Lucia," "Auld Lang Syne," "Minuet," and "Greensleeves," you'll also hear four other songs, including "Edelweiss," "Music Box Dancer," and two others we were not able to identify. Kids can also change the sound of the piano to vibraphone, oboe, trumpet, saxophone, banjo, violin, and guitar. The Record function lets kids record their own song up to 38 notes. Press the two Play Back buttons and step on the piano keys one at a time to hear your song played note by note. When you press Record again, the piano will reset for another recording.
Is It Fun?
Little kids will love playing music on this big piano, whether playing the built-in songs or making up their own melodies. This isn't going to teach kids how to play the piano, but it will allow kids to be creative and adults to feel like kids again.
Who It’s For
The Big Piano is for ages 3 and up.
What To Be Aware Of
The Big Piano requires three AA batteries, which are not included.
The black keys are not labeled with which built-in melody they will play. This probably won't bother most kids, though.
