What It Is
Clubs is a card game that combines elements from Hearts and Spades to create a game where players try to be the first to get rid of all their cards. You're also trying to win enough club cards to score points. The game is for two to six players, and each player gets 10 cards. The first player plays a Meld-Type of their choice. A Meld-Type can be any number of a kind (from one of a kind to four of a kind) or a run of two or more cards with sequential numbers. The suit doesn't matter. Once the lead Meld-Type is played, the other players take turns playing a matching Meld-Type from their hand that contains the same number of cards as the Meld-Type that was led. The highest card must be higher than the highest card from the previous play. If a player can't play a correct Meld-Type, he can pass. When all other players pass consecutively, the last player to play wins the cards, or trick, and sets them aside. A trick is won automatically if a player plays a Meld-Type with a 15. The winner of the trick then leads with a new Meld-Type.
The first player to get rid of all his cards takes the highest available bonus card. (This will depend on how many players you have.) The other players continue as normal until the next player goes out and takes the next highest available bonus card. If only one player is left with cards in his hand after a trick is won, that player receives the 0 bonus card, and the round ends.
Players get points for each club card they won during the round and for the points on their bonus card. The points received for each club is printed on the card. The player with the 0 bonus card does not receive points for the club cards he won. The first player to win 50 points wins the game.
Clubs comes with 60 cards and six bonus cards.
Is It Fun?
This is a fun variation of Hearts and Spades, so if you've played those games before, then you're sure to like this one. There's a little bit of strategy here because you want to win tricks, but you also want to win tricks that have clubs in them so that you can, hopefully, score more points at the end. We like that there's no penalty for passing and that you don't have to worry about matching card suits in order to play cards. It makes things go a little faster.
