What It Is
Kay Kay's Alphabet Safari is a 40-page hardcover book in which Kay Kay is walking by the Star of Hope School in Kenya and notices how bare and bland the new classroom walls are. Kay Kay makes a promise to the students that he will paint their classroom walls with the different animals of Kenya from A-Z. The story then follows Kay Kay as he walks around the Kenyan countryside trying to draw inspiration for his art project. Along the way he encounters animals from ants to elephants, to crocodiles, to hippos and zebras. But it isn't until the end of his walk that he realizes that the inspiration and animals are all around him.
Located at the end of the book are also pages that teach kids basic phrases in Swahili as well as facts about the real-life Kay Kay and Star of Hope school in Kenya, which the story is based on.
The book is written and illustrated by Dana Sullivan.
Is It Fun?
The book's colorful and cute illustrations coupled with the animal names and the alphabet for early learners make this a sweet and fun read. We also like the bonus features at the end of the book, which also teach kids more about the story's underlying message-stressing the importance of philanthropy and community service.
