Osmo is a set of three games that work with iPad, merging physical game components with a tablet using Reflective Artificial Intelligent technology. You'll need to use wi-fi to download the three free apps that work with Osmo's game components, but you don't need wi-fi to play the games.
Osmo comes with game components for playing Words and Tangram, as well as a base for your iPad and a reflector that goes over your iPad's camera. In order to play the third game, Newton, all you need is paper and a pen.
Words is a spelling game sort of like Hangman. Kids can play cooperatively or competitively. A picture is shown on the screen, and kids must identify what the picture is and find the letter tiles that spell its word. Place the tiles in front of the device and the reflector detects them, reads them, and shows them on the screen. Like in Hangman, you get a certain number of incorrect letter guesses. If you correctly spell the word before you run out of incorrect guesses, you score points.
Tangram comes with seven colorful tangram pieces that kids use to build different pictures as shown on the screen. Again, the reflector detects what pieces kids are using and where they are being placed, and kids can look at the screen to see if they are correctly placing the pieces. As kids play, they unlock even more tangram puzzles to solve.
To play Newton, place a piece of blank paper in front of your device and draw on the paper to create a path for the falling orange balls on the screen. As you draw, the path appears on the screen. The object is to get the balls to bounce against the targets. As you progress, you unlock more puzzles.
The Words and Tangram pieces easily store inside their boxes when playtime is over.
These games are a lot of fun to play solo or with friends and family members. Kids will love seeing the game pieces and their drawings appear on the screen as they play. Of course, to play Osmo, you need an iPad, which is sold separately. The price of iPad and the price of Osmo might cause this to be out of some parents' budgets. For families that already own an iPad and are looking for new ways to play together using the device, Osmo is a good option.
Osmo is for ages 6 and up.
Osmo is designed for iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad Mini, iPad Mini Retina, and iPad Air.
