What It Is
The 7D Mine Train is a free iOS and Android app based on the new Disney XD series The 7D, which is all about The Seven Dwarves from Snow White. In this side-scrolling game, kids get to pick a dwarf and pilot him in his special mine cart on a twisting and turning mine track that goes through locations from the show, including the 7D Mine, the Enchanted Forest, and the Queen's Treasure Room. As you ride, the goal is to avoid obstacles and collect gems that will help you customize the mine carts and unlock special power-ups. There are also different missions for kids to complete to earn even more gems.
Before kids play, they can also watch an introductory video about each dwarf character. At the time of this review, not all of the dwarf characters were available in the app, but Disney said all characters would be available by July 7. While the app is free, an in-app purchase of $4.99 will unlock the 7D Super Pack, which unlocks all of the dwarves, multiplies your gems, and allows kids to form the seven-cart mine train and explore six new realms.
Is It Fun?
This is a very fast-paced game that does take some time to master. The mine carts go really fast down the track, and it's not always easy to navigate them around the obstacles. To jump the track or jump over obstacles, you've got to tap the screen, but it's not very clear if you're supposed to tap the screen in a certain area or how to make the mine cart go higher. There is a tutorial on how to play, but it's hidden in the Parent section, which is inaccessible to kids. Still, for kids who like these kinds of games and want to take the time to learn how to play, this is a fun and free option.
Who It’s For
The 7D Mine Train is for ages 6-8. There is a link to a Parent section on the homepage. Tapping on it prompts you to enter your year of birth. This is designed to prevent kids under 13 from accessing this section.
What To Be Aware Of
If you want to prevent in-app purchases, you must disable in-app purchases under your device's settings.
Kids who enjoy side-scrolling adventure games will have fun trying to complete the different missions as they navigate their favorite dwarf character down the track. However, it does take some practice to get the hang of playing the game, and kids who are easily frustrated may not enjoy playing this game.
