What It Is
Fluxx from Looney Labs is a 2-6 player card game in which the rules are constantly changing. Each player starts the game with a hand of three cards. The basic rules are laid at the center of the table along with the draw pile. It doesn't matter who goes first but the game starts by following the basic rules: draw one card and play one card per turn. There are various types of cards you can play throughout the game, including Rules, Goals, Keepers, and Action cards. If you chose to play a Goal card, it will determine what the goal of the game will be, such as whichever player has the Milk and Cookies Keeper cards on the table wins. It's a good idea not to play these cards too early until you have a few Keepers on the table to help you meet these goals. Players can also change the goal of the game at any time by replacing it with a new goal from their hand.
You can play a Keeper card at any time, and if you don't know what to play they are usually a good place to start. Most goals require you to have a pair of Keepers in play in order to win the game. Keepers feature symbols ranging from bread to dogs to the sun and more.
To change the basic rules of the game, players can play Rule cards, such as "Draw 2," which increases the number of cards you must draw per turn.
You can also play Action cards, which are similar to Rule cards in terms of what they do (Draw 3 and Play 2, etc) but usually only work to the advantage of one player and can only be used once then discarded. However, if you draw another action card during that turn, you may also be required to play it.
Eventually, one player will meet the game's current goal to win the game.
Is It Fun?
Fluxx is the kind of game that sounds complicated then you start playing and it's just plain fun. Despite the constant changes in this game, we found it surprisingly easy to follow and pick up. We also think the changes add a unique strategic twist to a classic card game.
We also like that the length of the gameplay is always up in the air. Sometimes with the right hand it can end in a few minutes, while other times it can last for a half hour.
Who It’s For
Fluxx is for 2-6 players, ages 8 and up. It will likely appeal to kids (and adults) who like a little added strategy to their games.
What To Be Aware Of
There are supplemental cards that include Creepers, which work like Keepers but against you and can often prevent you from winning, and the Meta Rule Card, which prevents the use of Creeper cards for the entire game. We suggest using the Meta Rule card when first learning the game.
