What It Is

Born in the Wild: Baby Mammals and Their Parents by Lita Judge is a picture book that teaches kids about baby mammals. Soft lifelike illustrations accompany each bit of information about the animals. Did you know that some mammals are born very small and stay with their parents for a few months before venturing out on their own? Some animals such as giraffes are born and ready to run within hours of birth, mostly because giraffes need to sprint from danger, such as lions on the prowl. Baby bear cubs nurse on their mother. In the Arctic, the entire herd of musk ox create a protective circle around a musk ox calf to protect him from hungry wolves. Pushing, shoving, biting, and roughhousing makes baby animals strong and teaches them the skills they need to survive. The big lesson we learn from this book is that all animals need love and nurturing and care just like you and me. The back of the book has even more information about all the animals and a glossary of terms.
