What It Is

Poor Doreen: A Fishy Tale is a hard-cover 40-page tale about a sweet yet oblivious fish named Miss Doreen Randolph-Potts. Miss Doreen is on her way to visit her second cousin twice removed who just had 157 babies. But being oblivious, she mistakes a fisherman's hook for a tasty dragonfly and continues to think all is well and good as she swallows the hook whole. But the story doesn't end there. She is then placed in the fisherman's basket, swooped up into the mouth of a hungry Great Blue Heron, and eventually, in a very roundabout way, arrives at her intended destination.

Is It Fun?

This is a fun story of a clueless fish with full page illustrations that perfectly fit the text for each page. We also liked how, in addition to the dialogue from Doreen, there is always a line or two from the unseen narrator to keep the reader fully aware of how dire Doreen's situation really is.

Who It’s For

Poor Doreen: A Fishy Tale is for ages 4-8.

What To Be Aware Of

The humor can be a bit dark at times, given Doreen's circumstance, and some children may take longer to comprehend this.
