What It Is
Whole Wide World 2 is a sequel to the social studies app Whole Wide World. In the app, kids explore 15 countries: Australia, South Africa, Brazil, Kenya, Egypt, Iceland, the UK, Russia, Italy, India, Thailand, China, Mexico, Antarctica, and the USA. Only four countries are available in the free version of the app (Australia, China, Egypt, and Iceland), and the other countries are available through in-app purchases. A premium version of the app for $4.99 unlocks all 15 countries, or you can purchase a six-country pack for $2.99 and unlock the rest of the countries for $0.99 each.
In each country, kids play games to earn four stamps and a country postcard. The games include seek-and-find games, spelling games, puzzles, and skill-and-action games. As the stamps and postcards are earned, they are saved to the app's scrapbook, which kids can access at any time to see what they've earned and tap on the stamps to hear fun facts.
Is It Fun?
This is an interactive way to introduce kids to the geography, history, and culture of different countries. With 15 countries and multiple games in each, there's a lot for kids to explore in this app.
Who It’s For
Whole Wide World 2 is for ages 5-8. A button on the homepage provides access to more apps, but parents are asked to enter a three-digit code, which is provided, before accessing the App Store.
What To Be Aware Of
This app is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad running iOS 6.0 or later. It is optimized for iPhone 5.
We think there's just enough variation in the gameplay to keep kids interested, but after kids earn all the stamps and postcards, there really isn't any incentive for them to go back and play the games again, unless there is one in particular they really like. Some kids might like looking through the scrapbook and listening to the fun facts again.
