What It Is
Edward Hopper Paints His World is a 40-page picture book that tells the story of artist Edward Hopper's life from boyhood to famed American painter. Author Robert Burleigh introduces kids to the artist, who, as a boy, always knew he was going to grow up and be a painter. Kids follow Hopper on his journey studying in New York City and traveling in Paris, painting things that he wants to paint, from buildings to gas stations to lighthouses. The illustrations from Wendell Minor give kids a glimpse into what life was like in the early twentieth century. The back of the book includes an Afterword with more information on Edward Hopper and pictures of four of Hopper's paintings.
Is It Fun?
This is a great book for introducing young kids to the life of a famous painter. The illustrations in the book are beautiful and, though original, evoke familiar scenes from Hopper's paintings while imagining how these scenes looked from the ever-observant Hopper's perspective. If you have a young artist at home, this book would make a great gift for him or her.
