What It Is

The Orchestra Pit by Johanna Wright is a charming 32-page picture book about a snake who wanders into the wrong pit-the orchestra pit. He slithers around, discovering all the instruments and trying to figure out where he is. Kids are introduced to the wind instruments, strings, and percussion as they follow along with this befuddled snake. In the end, the snake doesn't like all the noise and finds his way back to his pit-the snake pit.

Is It Fun?

This is a clever book because it teaches kids about the different instruments and connects the sound of the instruments to those of animals. The illustrations are colorful and whimsical with lots of creative, open-ended storytelling options based on the imagery.

Who It’s For

The Orchestra Pit is for ages 2-6.
