What It Is
Magic Marks The Spot is the first of a new series called The Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates. The story takes place in the fictional island country of Augusta. Young Hilary Westfield is the daughter of a High Society family and being raised to be a High Society lady. But there's one problem ... she would rather be a pirate. Upon being sent to the finest finishing school, she promptly plans her escape and joins a crew of misfit pirates and embarks upon a quest for a long-lost treasure that is full of humor, suspense and surprising plot twists that will have young readers wondering who are the good guys and who are the bad.
Is It Fun?
Author Caroline Carlson has created a fantastic cast of characters that readers will enjoy getting to know. Hillary is a courageous female lead character with a loyal governess who's akin to Mary Poppins. Though the theme of the book is pirates, the story skews towards girls, and it has a broad appeal to many different kinds of kids-whether or not they're fans of pirates.
Who It’s For
The publisher recommends the book for ages 8 to 12, but 9 to 10 seems to be the sweet spot.
