The Matchbox 70th Anniversary Collector’s Box undeniably looks the part. Everything about this box exudes a retro feel, from the typeface of the Matchbox logo, to the old-timey illustration of antiquated race cars. The back of the box shows off the 8 cars you get inside, but an even better way to find out is to lift the front flap up and gaze upon them yourself. The plastic clamshell displays each car in profile, as well as their individual storage boxes, each illustrated with a unique image of the car, also in a charmingly retro aesthetic. Taking these out of the box, (which is easy to do without damaging it, by the way) the cars have a satisfying weight to them thanks to their hearty die cast composition. The black, white and orange paint apps accent a dignified, frosty light gray finish. The look is a lot like that one type of polished river rock used in decorating your front yard. If you know, you know. The decoration has been cranked up to max on these cars, with all manner of fine detail replicated, like bumpers, front and rear lights, logos, and more. Occasionally, a detail will be missing that is present on other cars, which just makes their absence stand out even more. The windows are lightly tinted, but clear enough to allow slarp-eyed collectors to see the interiors of the cars, which hold even more minute molded detail.

The variety of car shapes and models here is wide. Some cars include a chrome chassis, a tan “upholstered” interior, or a spare tire, details which accentuate their differences even more. In all, you get a 2020 Nissan GT-R, 1954 Jaguar D-Type, Porsche 910, 1971 MGB GT coupe, Toyota 4Runner, 1993 Ford Mustang LX SSP, 2002 Audi RS 6 Avant, and the Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG 6×6. Much like all Matchbox cars, these cars don’t simply look pretty, they also roll smoothly on their turning wheels. In short, these cars look excellent on a shelf, in-box, or in your hand as you play. You can’t lose!
